KUALA LUMPUR: Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who is standing for the Umno president post in thepartyelections, seems to be making headway in the race, with candidates from his camp emerging winners in polls for the party’s Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings. While congratulating the elected wing leaders yesterday, he said the new lineup is capable of bringing new breath to the 72-year-old party. Although their names had yet to be officially announced, Tengku Razaleigh, popularly known as Ku Li, said he was happy that all the candidates he supported won in the contest. “Those who won were the candidates that we supported. God willing, this will give new breath to the party,” he told reporters at an event organised by Pahang Umno. Initial results announcedonUmnopolls

Zimbabwe leader survives assassinationbid HARARE: Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa said on Saturday he narrowly survived an attempt on his life after a blast at a party rally that injured two of his vice- presidents and party officials. Fifteen people were injured, three seriously and some losing limbs, in the explosion during an election campaign event in Zimbabwe’s second city Bulawayo, according to Health Minister David Parirenyatwa. Footage circulating on social media showed an explosion and plumes of smoke around the president as he descended stairs from the podium at the city’s White City stadium. Mnangagwa suggested he was the target of the attack, which he said also injuredVice- Presidents Kembo Mohadi and Constantino Chiwenga. “I amused to these attempts,”Mnangagwa told state media, adding that an object “exploded a few inches away fromme ... but it is not my time”. But Mnangagwa insisted “the country is peaceful” as Zimbabwe prepares for its first ever polls not to feature former president Robert Mugabe on July 30. “The campaign has been conducted in a free and peaceful environment, and we will not allow this cowardly act to get in our way as wemove towards elections.” – AFP
